BACKGROUND INFORMATION
  • What is Black Sustainability, Inc.? Black Sustainability, Inc. (BSI) is a 501(c)3 organization with a mission to mobilize people of Afrikan descent to (re)build sustainable communities and economies that restore balance to the planet. Entering its 10th year of service as an ecosystem steward, BSI has been committed to building the largest global network of sustainability practitioners in the African diaspora that are exchanging and collaborating on best practices and solutions for a greener future. 

 

  • What is the Black Sustainability Network (BSN)? The Black Sustainability Network (BSN) is the largest global network for sustainability practitioners (organizations, professionals and enthusiasts) of Afrikan descent. The Black Sustainability Summit (BSS) serves as BSN’s annual gathering and 2025 marks the 10th year of the summit.
     

  • What is the Black Sustainability Hi-TEK Learning Journey? The Black Sustainability Hi-TEK (High Traditional Ecological Knowledge) Learning Journey is an immersive experience in various BSN regions that offers attendees a chance to exchange indigenous wisdom and modern strategies to address global climate/environmental issues. 

 

GENERAL LEARNING JOURNEY INFORMATION
  • When and where will the 2025 Learning Journey take place? This Learning Journey will kick-off with the 10th annual Black Sustainability Summit being held in Ghana, West Africa this year at the Kweku Andoh Sustainability Institute (KASI) in collaboration with HABESHA, Inc.’s Dzodzome Festival in the Volta Region, then will continue with a group tour across five regions of the country, all taking place from Oct.15-27, 2025. It will be an unique opportunity to learn about Ghana's rich history of ecological stewardship while exploring some of the region’s most naturally beautiful landscapes, historic attractions, and presentations by local BSN members leading sustainable solutions. Key experiences include visits to sustainable farms, ecological reserves, vibrant market places, and renewable energy projects, along with cultural immersions that showcase the importance of environmental preservation in African traditions.
     

  • Is this Learning Journey the same as the Black Sustainability Summit? Somewhat! This year’s 10th Annual Black Sustainability Summit will be a part of the Ghana Learning Journey, which will serve as a more immersive summit experience in an active BSN hub. 

  • What is KASI? KASI is named in honor of Ghanaian ethnobotanist, Dr. A. Kweku Andoh. It is an eco-resort and a research/training institute focused on sustainable and renewable eco-holistic practices from an indigenous African perspective.

 

  • What is HABESHA, Inc.'s Dzodzome Festival? The two-day annual Dzodzome Festival, hosted by HABESHA, Inc. at KASI, showcases the work of the Institute to uplift methods of sustaining and improving the community and environment. This year’s Black Sustainability Summit in-person sessions and hands-on workshops with experts and indigenous leaders will occur during this festival.

 

  • Is the attendance for all 10 days mandatory? No, attendance for all 10 days is not mandatory. Keep in mind, the locations for the tour are spread out, so if you leave the tour early, you will be responsible for your own transportation and any other cost related to returning to Accra for your flight. If you choose to leave and rejoin the group at a different location on the tour itinerary, it will be at your own cost.

 

LEARNING AND ACTIVITIES
  • What will I learn during the Learning Journey? Participants will gain firsthand insights into how traditional wisdom has been used for centuries to maintain balance with nature. The journey will explore sustainable agriculture, alternative energy solutions, waste innovations, holistic health initiatives, and more, all rooted in Afrikan culture.

 

  • Who will I be interacting with during the Learning Journey? You will have the opportunity to interact with local and international attendees, environmental leaders, community innovators, cultural ambassadors, and members of the Black Sustainability Network.

 

  • What is the focus of the sustainability tour part of the Learning Journey? The tour will highlight the intersection of Ghana’s ecological heritage and innovation with project presentations by local Black Sustainability Network members and others leading sustainable solutions that are scheduled at key tour stops. We will also explore some of the region’s most naturally beautiful landscapes and historic attractions.

 

  • What kind of activities will be included? Activities include hands-on workshops, sustainability tours of local Ghanaian projects, visits to sustainable farms, ecological reserves, vibrant marketplaces, renewable energy projects, and cultural immersions.

 

  • Will there be opportunities for knowledge exchange? Yes, a key focus of the Learning Journey is knowledge exchange between local and international attendees, particularly the sharing of indigenous wisdom and modern sustainability strategies.
     

  • Will I gain practical skills or strategies? Yes, the goal is for attendees to leave empowered with a deeper understanding of traditional ecological knowledge and equipped with actionable strategies to implement in their own communities.
     

REGISTRATION AND PARTICIPATION
  • How can I participate/register? Start by completing a pre-registration form. Select either the International Attendee form OR Local Attendee form.
     

  • Does pre-registering guarantee my participation? No, pre-registering does not guarantee your participation.
     

  • Is there a limit to the number of participants? Yes, there are limited spots available for the entire Learning Journey (Black Sustainability Summit + Tour), however there is more space capacity for attendance at just the Summit portion, taking place during the Dzodzome Festival from October 18-19, 2025. 

 

  • When will participants be selected and notified? Our team will be following up with registrants on a rolling basis from June-July 2025.

  • When are the information sessions? At this time, there will only be pre-departure information sessions for international attendees scheduled for July 27th and September 4th. However, a pre-recorded video covering key information for registrants will be added to this website soon. 

  • Will there be a way to connect with other attendees before the trip? Yes, a WhatsApp group will be set up for attendees in August 2025.

  • Can children attend the summit or full Learning Journey? Children at least 12 years of age and older are permitted to attend. Exceptions may be made. 

TRAVEL AND LOGISTICS
  • When should international attendees get their visa to travel to Ghana? We advise that attendees apply for a single entry visa (or a multi-entry visa) a month to 6 weeks before departure.

  • When is the departure date to Ghana? Learning Journey attendees traveling to Ghana will need to arrive in Accra by or on October 15th, 2025. Since attendees will have to make their own flight arrangements, the departure date will depend on the departure city. 

 

COST AND PACKAGES
  • What are the Learning Journey packages and what do they include? There are two main packages and they both require a non-refundable $500 deposit by July 1, 2025:

    • $3,500 (Shared Room): package for those who are traveling with another guest and intend to share a room with them

    • $4,200 (Single Room): package for those who are traveling as a single guest and do not intend to share a room with another participant

 

  • Will there be a payment plan available for the Learning Journey? Yes, all Learning Journey (summit + tour) packages can be paid in installments. This is after you make your non-refundable $500 deposit.

 

  • What is the cost to only attend the Black Sustainability Summit during the Dzodzome Festival in the Volta region from October 18-19, 2025? For those who will already be in Ghana or live there, the price options are as follows:

 

  • 1-day Summit Pass - GH₵1,500/$150 (2 meals, no transport/no lodging)

 

  • 2-day Summit pass - GH₵2,500/$250 (2 daily meals, no transport/no lodging)

 

LODGING & TRANSPORTATION OPTIONS - The only lodging KASI will have for local attendees will be camping (limited space). There are hotels in the area, but attendees will be responsible for their own booking. Transportation to and from Accra will only be available on a limited basis for those staying at KASI at an additional cost and with advance booking. The add-on options are as follows:

 

  • 1-day Summit Pass w/tent camping - GH₵2,500/$250 (2 meals, no transport)

 

  • 2-day Summit pass w/tent camping - GH₵4,500/$450 (2 daily meals, no transport)

 

  • 2-day Summit pass w/tent camping and transport - GH₵7,000/$700 (2 daily meals + round trip transport to/from Accra, tent camping at KASI)

 

NOTE: Payment option details will be provided after the pre-registration process. 

 

  • Are there any funding opportunities or discounts for the summit and/or tour? At this time, there are only discounts on the full Ghana Learning Journey summit + tour packages for those who donate to BSI’s 10x$10k fundraising campaign
